Rodriguan specialities

The lagoons of Rodrigues provide a natural larder for the islanders, most of whom are fisherfolk. Fish and other seafood are served in hotel and local restaurants in Port Mathurin. Octopus is used in salads, cari (curry) and daube (casserole), and is less expensive than lobster, prawn and crab, which are simply steamed. Another local speciality is cono cono, a mollusc similar to whelk, which is incorporated into a refreshing salad dressed with local limes. Fresh fish is jazzed up and fried Chinese-style with ginger and garlic. Cari de poulet aux grains (chicken curry with red beans) and poisson salé (salt fish) are typical Rodriguan dishes served with plain boiled rice. Try to go easy on the local achards (pickles) since they are made from chillies that are considerably stronger than the ones that are grown in Mauritius.
